The Story of Kashvee Gautam: From Playing Street Cricket with Boys to Signing a ₹ 2 Crore WPL Contract with Gujarat Giants

When Kashvee Gautam’s name was called at the WPL auction site in Mumbai, she was on her way back from her practice session in Chandigarh aboard a bus. As soon as the bid began, her other passengers began to snicker. At home, she attempted to speak with her parents, but the call was unexpectedly dropped.

Gujarat Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore engaged in a bidding battle since both teams were eager to get the all-around player. In a matter of minutes, the two franchisees raised Kashvee’s price to ₹ 75 lakh, although that was untrue. The battle royale was entered by UP Warriorz.

Giants refused to budge, but Warriorz put up a strong fight and eventually gave up when the asking price hit ₹ 2 crore.

On the bus, everyone began congratulating Kashvee. A few of them began requesting a party from her. She attempted to contact her parents once again. After speaking with her father, she discovered the amount was ₹ 2 crore.

“They were a little emotional once the bid was over,” Kashvee recounted.

She was very sure she was going to be acquired by either the Giants or the Warriors.

“All I wanted to do was play WPL with any squad that was available. My trials with Gujarat (Giants), UP Warriorz, and RCB had all gone very well. Because of my excellent batting in their trials, I thought that either Gujarat or UP would sign me, Kashvee told CricketNext.

Chandigarh native Kashvee is now the most expensive uncapped player at a WPL Auction. More money was earned by her than by Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain of India and her personal favorite.

It was astounding. I was surprised by this large offer. I expected a bid since I had a strong season, but I never imagined it would get this far. I didn’t respond at all,” Kashvee said.

“While the contract money is significant, what matters most is that I’ll be able to play in the WPL, get exposure, and have a chance to show off my skills on a stage like this. Even if it’s difficult, this is a fantastic chance, she said.

Kashvee was sporty from the start, participating in interschool contests in volleyball, skating, and sports on behalf of her school. But she had a soft spot for cricket, for some reason.

I used to play gully cricket with boys when it comes to cricket. I’ve always had a thing for cricket. Although I had a strong track record in athletics, my passion was always for cricket, Kashvee said.

“So I had an action, I knew how to bowl.” I knew how to hit, and I used to bat a little too. That’s when I became more interested in cricket. My neighbor is one of my association’s selectors. I was suggested by him to Nagesh Gupta, my coach. I enrolled in his school the very following day.

That’s how Kahsvee and her longtime mentor Nagesh Gupta started their professional career together in 2015. Gupta continued, saying that he had seen Kahsvee playing in the streets with guys and that she was friends with a Ranji Trophy player who lived next door.

“Obviously, the prize money makes me very pleased, but I’m more delighted that she has a team. Playing in the WPL is more essential than winning money, Gupta told CricketNext.

Gupta desires Kashvee to become an all-around player and a power hitter for India since the national team is presently lacking in both areas.

She is a very excellent all-around player on the field. Although she has always been a skilled bowler, her batting has improved over the last year. She has lower-order big-hitting ability and can be an impact player for any club.

“I constantly advise her to concentrate on hitting rather than bowling. We need a hitter who can win games if you see the Indian white-ball squad. I often remind her that in tight circumstances, you have to bat and bat, because she can smash monster sixes. Coach Gupta expressed his pride, saying, “I see her playing for India and having a big impact as an all-rounder in the future.”

Speaking out on Kashvee’s work ethic was Gupta as well.

“No one puts in as much effort as she does off the field. She has an insatiable need for knowledge. Although she has always been gifted, we have been able to improve her accuracy thanks to her dedication and some technical guidance from me. Any coach would be happy to have her as a pupil.

In addition, Kashvee related a fascinating story about her playtime with nearby boys and said that many would mistakenly think she was a guy due to her appearance.

“At first, when I played in the streets, people didn’t know whether I was a girl or a boy because of my appearance. They once believed me to be a boy. They didn’t realize I was a female until after I was named in newspapers and chosen for the Under-19 women’s squad.

At the Gujarat Giants, Kashvee will train with some of the greatest names in sports, like Mithali Raj and Nooshin Al Khadeer. She is eager to play alongside players like Ashleigh Gardner, however.

“As an all-round player, I am excited to play with Ashleigh Gardner.”

In terms of men’s cricket, Kashvee has two players under its watch.

“Bhuvneshwar Kumar is someone I admire.” He still has footage of him bowling. Kashvee remarked, “My favorite all-rounder is Hardik Pandya.”
